VPN GUIDE
What Is a VPN?
A VPN (Virtual Private Network) creates an encrypted connection between your device and a VPN server. Depending on the server you connect to, the IP address and location visible to a web service may change.
What a VPN can do
- Encrypt your connection, which can be useful on public Wi-Fi
- Use the VPN server's IP address instead of your usual public IP address
- Change the location visible to a web service depending on the VPN server you connect to
Free VPNs
The main advantage is that you can try them without paying. Available servers and speeds may be less consistent, so check the operator, logging policy, and terms of use.
Paid VPNs
Many paid services offer dedicated apps, larger server networks, and customer support. Compare price, available regions, simultaneous connections, refund terms, privacy policy, and logging policy.
Free option: VPN Gate
VPN Gate is an academic experiment project at the University of Tsukuba. Its public VPN relay servers are provided by volunteers around the world, so available countries, servers, and speeds can change.
What to check when choosing a VPN
- Whether servers are available in the country or region you need
- Ease of use on your phone or computer
- Connection speed and stability
- Price, cancellation, and refund terms
- The operator, privacy policy, and logging policy
Important note
VPNs have many legitimate uses, but regional restrictions and service conditions vary by platform. Check the terms of use of the relevant service and the availability conditions set by the rights holder.
